If you ever tried to land a hot-air balloon in North Zealand, you would have difficulty avoiding one of the vast forests or many lakes, horse paddocks, green meadows with grazing cows and sheep or a wavy field of grain. But the view is breathtaking!
North Zealand is also known as Royal North Zealand, because the Crown owned most of the land in the past. Here you can find the beautiful royal Fredensborg Palace, a fine baroque castle with an extensive park at Esrum Lake, and the ancient Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, now a museum. In Helsingør, you can visit Kronborg Castle, the literary home of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, where the play is performed every year.
Rudersdal also has its small castles, although they are not royal. Gammel Holtegaard (Old Holtegaard) is a beautiful baroque castle with a large baroque-style garden, which is well worth a visit.
Gammel Holtegaard has an art gallery with a programme of three to four ambitious exhibitions per year, both in the gallery of the main house and in the baroque gardens.

You can find several international-standard art museums along the Øresund coast. The best known is the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, a leading international museum, situated in a large historical park with views across the Øresund to Sweden.
