Childcare

In Denmark, families are offered childcare.

In Denmark, most parents work, and they place their children in a nursery (vuggestue in Danish, usually 0–2 years old), day care (dagpleje, mostly 0–2 years old) or kindergarten (børnehave, usually 3–5 years old) during the day.

Once parental leave is over, most children attend day care or nursery until they are about 3 years old.

After that, most children attend kindergarten or preschool until they start school, at about 6 years old.

Childcare

  • Almost all Danish families use child daycare. All children in Denmark, who have turned 26 weeks old, are guaranteed a place in a childcare institution. The guarantee is valid three months after an application has been received. We do our best to accommodate your wishes for childcare. The guarantee requires that you are registered at the national register address here in the municipality.

Options for childcare consist of day nurseries for children 0-3 years old, kindergartens for children 3-6 years old, and pre-school/after school centres for children 6-10 years old. In addition, there is the option of local childcare, in which children are cared for in private homes.

The opening hours of the childcare facilities are in most cases Monday-Thursday 6:30 am to 5 pm, and Fridays until 4 pm.

Childcare is financed partly by the parents, partly by the municipality.

Prices differ somewhat depending on the municipality and the type of childcare. Prices for children 0-3 years old are approx. up to DKK 3900 per month including meals, kindergartens cost less.

Most childcare services are municipal, but there are a great many privately owned facilities as well, and in a few of them the spoken language is English. To register, please contact the respective municipality, and do it as soon as possible. A waiting list is not unusual.

  • You can enter your registration for childcare placement online at the digital placement service (in Danish).

    • Log on digital placement service with MitID
    • Click on the name of the child
    • When you apply for a childcare service, you must consider the date from when you need childcare
    • Sign up for two priority childcare services
    • You will then get a receipt in Digital Post/E-boks, which you can save or print out
